X Marks the Spot for Veteran Success

August 18, 2021
GE Aviation and Xavier University in Cincinnati’s long-standing commitment to veteran success is getting national attention.

GE Aviation contributed $3 million to Xavier University over the last six years to develop and strengthen the Student Veteran Center. As a result, the school has seen a steady growth in veteran and military affiliated enrollment over the last several years, culminating with the university being named a top ten school for veterans and a top school for military spouses by Military Friendly®, an organization that rates companies and colleges on their programs to recruit and retain military veterans as employees and students. This honor came just as GE made its final payment in the multi-year partnership and as Xavier finalized its plans for continued success independent of GE’s financial support.

Colin Cooper, the son of a retired Airman and a 2020 Xavier graduate, felt the support the moment he arrived on campus. “I truly felt welcomed from the first day I stepped foot in the veteran center. The connections I made with other students in the center were some of the most sincere connections I made during my four years at XU. The Center is a great place to study but an even better place to network and build connections with your peers. The staff at the Center genuinely care about your success and well-being as not just a student, but also as a person,” he said.

Mario Leon, an Air Force veteran, and graduate of Xavier’s Master of Business Administration program, who now works at Amazon, had the same positive experience. “The staff of the Student Veterans Center understand that there are differences and unique challenges that veterans face. They always add their special touch to the procedures, policies we encounter as students and the resources that they offer specifically for veterans really make Xavier and the Student Veterans Center a special place,” he said.

“GE is honored to have played a part in ensuring Veteran’s receive the individualized attention and premier education that Xavier delivers,” said Jamie Regg, GE Aviation’s Infrastructure Senior Executive who is an Army Veteran and worked closely with the Xavier team on the Veteran’s program. “We look forward to the continued success of the veterans who graduate from Xavier and the talent they are bringing to the workforce,” he said

At the launch of the partnership, David Joyce, who was the GE Aviation President and CEO at the time said, “Our goal is to make Xavier the destination of choice for veterans who want an exceptional education experience.” Mission accomplished.

The Xavier Veteran’s Center was recently featured for its success on wcpo.com.
